During the second decade of the nineteenth century the Italian guitarist Mauro Giuliani, who was living in Vienna at the time, gave several concerts with the pianists Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Ignaz Moscheles. The following compositions were written expressly for these occasions: Serenades opus 63 and 66 for piano, violin, guitar, clarinet (or flute) and cello (or bassoon by Hummel, La Sentinelle and Der Abschied der Troubadours for voice, piano, violin and guitar by Hummel and by Moscheles-Guiliani-Mayseder respectively and a number of works for guitar and piano, such as this pot-pourri opus 53 on themes by, among others, Grétry, Boieldieu, Spontini, Mozart and Paisiello.
